Some Star Trek Advice for the Non-Trekkie
Sunday, May 10, 2009 at 10:26AM I knew I was in a bit of trouble as soon as I got into the movie theatre. The geeks sitting behind me were rambling on and on sharing bits of Star Trek trivia. After about twenty minutes of listening to this shit I was ready to change seats, but I decided against that and just started to make fun of them instead. My son thought I was pretty rude but since we had pretty good seats it was the best that I could do.
Ok, so I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan. I'll admit that to you right here and now. In fact, I never watched the television show, except for that episode with those tribble things, or was it trebbles? (You know those little hairy ball things!) Other then that episode I pretty much ignored Star Trek as much as humanly possible. As far as the films are concerned, I did enjoy The Wrath of Khan (1982), especially the part when they put that slimy bug in Chekov's ear.
I had no intention of seeing anymore Star Trek films in my life. However, the hype for the latest installment is so strong, I got caught up in the excitement. So here is my advice for those of you who are not Trekkies. It's not awful, so go see it.
Without giving up too much of the plot, this prequel brings the crew of the Starship Enterprise together for the first time. I will admit that watching these guys find their way to Star Fleet command is pretty entertaining. For a good forty-five minutes I thought I was going to enjoy the whole movie. Then they went Star Trek on me. Instead of revamping this series like they did with the most recent James Bond films and Batman, they went right back to what they do best, bore the hell out of you with a weird storyline and intellectual crap. I don't want to think too much when I go to the movies. I want things to be exciting and fun. I guess I'm funny that way.
Nonetheless, the film has some good performances and its really cool to see how they have chosen to recast these iconic figures. Let's be honest these guys had some big shoes to fill and they all do a pretty good job at it. My favorite of the new cast is "Dr. McCoy", he is played by Karl Urban.
So, it's a new spin on the same old story. If you didn't like it much before there is enough in it for you to walk out feeling like you didn't waste your money. If you loved it before, you will love it again. Those geeks in the back of me left cheering and clapping all the way to the parking lot.
